Albacore Developments

by Race Team 2 24. June 2011 06:40

We have been doing a spot of development with our Albacore sails, John Gimson who is Iain Percy's training partner in the Star and has also been apart of the team GB team for some time now approached Speed Sails as he fancied doing some Albacore sailing. We saw this as a great opportunity to finely tune and take a closer look at our sails.

We have put some hard hours into it and John sailing with his farther Paul came out on top at the Hamble open. John & Paul are sailing at the nationals held by Llandudno SC, watch this space to see how they get on. Good luck chaps!

Speed Sails Win Enterprise Inlands 2011

by Race Team 2 24. June 2011 06:33

Speed Sails  do it again

49 Enterprises on the water, there was an entry of 52 boats but circumstances prevented 3 competitors attending the event. BCYC provided an excellent venue for what turned out to be a titanic battle between Nick /Toby (23170 Team Gill from Frensham Pond SC) and Alan Johnson/Paula Fisher (19876 Subsonic Whinkle from SCYC/SSC).

This championship was a two day event. Saturday started in calm conditions but the wind increased in strength to a force 4-5 causing some capsizes and boat damage. Sunday was a force 3-4 variable with fewer incidents. This championship was so close, races 1, 2 and 5 being taken by our Inland Champions Nick & Toby and races 3 and 4 by the runners up Alan Johnson and Paula Fisher. There was also some first class sailing from Ann Jackson and Richard Adams that gave Ann third overall and the Enterprise Inland Ladies Championship. Enterprise Youth Champions were Chris Winters & Alex Homer.

Speed Sails Win Snipe Nationals 2011 for the 2nd Year in a Row

by Race Team 2 24. June 2011 06:09

Congratulations to our boys l, the boys took a clean sweep with 6 firsts. The Nationals were held at Stone Sailing Club over three days, unfortunately saturdays racing was cancelled due to it being a touch on the breezy side.

This was the boys first Snipe event, they came back both in agreement that the Snipe class were a very friendly fleet and hope to go on and do more events.

For people that don't know much about the Snipe, the Snipe is a huge class worldwide and has many top sailors like Robert Scheidt be apart of the class. Speeds have been working hard with Snipe sailors for the past few years to produce a fast set of sails for all conditions and it seems to be paying off.

New Speed Solo finishes 2nd at the Pre-Champs Reggatta

by Race Team 2 14. June 2011 02:37

We put the new Speed Solo to the test at the Pre-champs Reggatta held at the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy.

Speed Team had a consistent set of results (2,2,3,3,1) to finish second to Matt Howard. Conitions were brilliant, perfect sunshine at 12-15 knots on the Saturday. On Sunday the wind was a bit more of a handful, 30 knot gusts were recorded over the commitee boat. These conditions were excellent for testing the new Solo, Saturday racing was held outside of the harbour which gave competitors good sea sailing conditions, Sunday saw racing take part inside the harbour.

The boat stood up well to the test, we certainly felt the boat planed earlier than any other Solo he has sailed before, he also mentioned that it felt stiff and responsive. using the same rig setup that he used last year at the nationals to finish 3rd but this time using the New Speed Hull, he felt he was a lot closer to Matt Howard and was able to give him a good race compared to last year. Matt being the current Finn coach and an ex member of the GB Finn squad has certainly moved the bench mark up in the Solos, last year Matt dominated at the nationals showing excellent down wind speed which nobody could hang onto, I suppose hours of training in his Finn over the years has helped him to have great downwind technique. So we certainly felt that the boat is something special and was certainly up beat having pushed Matt hard around the race course.

New Speed Rig wins the 2011 GP14 Northern Championships

by Race Team 2 3. June 2011 06:11

The GP14 Northern Championships were held at Hollingworth Lake, over the breezy weekend two of our customers topped the podium.

We were are using the new rig that Speeds have been developing, they are using a new Selden section with Aeroweb sails, they are also using the latest Duffin hull which Mike fitted out himself along with engineer of the world Martin Evans.

Here at Speeds we are always thinking of ways to make boats go faster, thats why MIke & Lizzie have chosen to use Speeds along with many others.

Congratulations also to Matt Thursfield & Sarah Froggott who finished 4th overall and topped the silver fleet, Matt is also using Aeroweb sails.

If your interested in the new Speed GP14 rig please don't hesitate to contact us at the loft, loft@speedsails or 0845 50 40 600

Speed Sails Win at Merlin 2011 Inland Championships at Draycote

by Race Team 2 3. June 2011 05:09

The Merlin Inlands were held at Draycote and John Gorringe & Toby Lewis stormed to victory using Speed Sails, they won every race on the Saturday. Our own Andy & Tom won the only race on the Sunday showing superb speed in the 30 knots+ breeze.

Only one race was held on the Sunday which proved a bit to windy for the second race, so with that it was enough to give John & Toby the title, Andy & Tom finished second.

8 of the top 11 were using Speeds, this is a great result for all the hard work we have been putting into our sails and the service we provide.

Congratulations to John & Toby and all those using Speeds.
