Speed Sails Solo Wins At Solo Midland Traveller Northampton 2011

by Race Team 2 7. September 2011 02:37

The Solo Midland traveller event took place at Pitsford in light, variable winds.

Thirteen boats ventured out to a calm reservoir hoping for the breeze to fill in enough to start racing and after a short delay, a little wind did fill in allowing a small course to be set.

All three races were managed with victory for the new Speed Solo as well as a win for a Speed Sails sailmaker in his first solo open. In light winds he pulled away with an edge of boatspeed on the rest of the fleet, posting two firsts and a second from the days racing. Saying he was pleased with the win and hoped to do more Midlands Solo events in the future.

Speed Sails Triumph Over Bank Holiday Weekend!

by Race Team 12. May 2009 19:25

The Solo Welsh Championships were dominated by Speed Sails, taking the top 5 places!

33 helms arrived to a sunny force 3 at Corus Sailing Club, Andy took the first race, Chris Brown took the 2nd and Ian Maclean took 3rd.

Saturday brought a gusty force 4, Andy won both races ahead of Chris Brown.

The top 5 sailors using Speed sails showed good consistent boat speed through all conditions. Andy and Chris were using the Seldon D+ rig, Ian Maclean was using the Super spar M7 and Ian Fox and Dave Mitchell were using the Seldon Cumulus. Therefore proving that Speed Sails are working well and catering for all the different types of rigs.

Three of the top five sailors were using the Speed Sails Championship winning hulls: Ian Fox, Dave Mitchell and Andy. Andy was also using a hull that was 3 years old, still showing that the hulls are lasting and performing well over time!

Matt Mee and Chris Robinson attended the Merlin Rocket Silver Tiller open meeting at Rutland water.

Twenty nine teams went sailing in a sunny force 4-5 gusting 6.  Matt and Chris showed excellent pace in the breezy stuff taking a win in the 1st and 3rd races.

Matt was making a guest appearance having a spare weekend from his 470 campaign.

Final results were Matt Mee & Chris Robinson, Mike Calvert & Chris Downham, Glen Truswell & Olly Turner, Matt Biggs & Rob Kennaugh.

The Gp14s travelled to Dovey Yacht club over the bank holiday weekend for their Welsh Championships. Attendance was down on previous years but the quality of the fleet was strong.

Racing was held out in the scenic Cardigan Bay for both days. Mike and Luke were showing good boat speed throughout the weekend, managing to take the Championship from Justin Jones & Lucy Evans/Chris Anderson, Simon Potts & Drew Nickless and Carl Jeffs & Jim Toothill. All sailors using Speed Sails.

Speed Sails News

by Race Team 29. April 2009 19:31

From everyone at Speed Sails and also on behalf of Richard’s family we would like to thank everyone for their kind words and support during this difficult time. It was a fitting tribute to Richard that so many of his friends were able to attend on Tuesday to say their farewells.

While Richard’s legacy will never be forgotten we also recognise the need to look to the future. Speed Sails will now pass on to Richard’s children, Ben and Steph, who are determined to keep it going. Ben in particular has shown a strong desire to follow on what his father started back in 1981.

Although he has worked at Speed Sails on and off over the last 6 years Ben is currently taking the time to learn more about every aspect of the business in preparation for taking over full time. During this transition period the day to day running of the business will be handled by Steve Parker (boat works), Andy (sail loft) and Liese Scott (accounts). With a combined experience at Speed Sails approaching 40 years they have all the credentials needed to develop and maintain the business until Ben has enough experience to assume complete control.

Once again, thank you to all of our customers for their consideration during this time, we are delighted to say that Speed Sails will continue trading and that the name Estaugh will still have a prominent position in dinghy racing for years to come.

We hope you will join us in showing as much support to Ben and Steph as was shown to Richard over the years.
